KunhimalOffline Nepal place finder

Kunhimal support

Kunhimal compares your iPhone's position and camera direction with named places from the Nepal OpenStreetMap extract. Initial field testing focuses on Kathmandu Valley. A match does not establish that a place is visible.

Identify a place

Allow camera access and Precise Location while using the app. Hold the iPhone upright and aim the centre crosshair towards a place. Move away from magnets, vehicles, and large metal objects if compass accuracy is low.

The camera view preserves the actual dot pattern. Tap a dot to pin one place in the compact inspector. Use the arrows to cycle overlapping entries. The target button returns to the centre aim. Details opens the full place sheet with elevation and source information. Names wrap above a separate selection control strip. Pause holds one image and its point positions. Tap and cycle while paused; use the magnify button, pinch or drag to inspect a dense area. Resume clears the captured image, selection and zoom.

Explore view lists every eligible visible place from either drawer state. Search by name or category, select a place, then use Back or Done. Search and scroll position survive Back. Show landmark names adds at most two optional names using category-aware distance and a small Wikipedia-coverage bonus. This is not measured visitor popularity. Places without coverage stay accessible. Dots need camera calibration and can be absent while centre matching works. Terrain and weather can hide a labelled place.

Use the filter button in the top control strip to open Place display. Each of the 18 categories has its own switch. These switches affect dots, labels and the centre result. Peaks & hills starts on; the other categories start off. There is no height boundary between mountains and hills. Unnamed records are excluded from the catalogue.

Hide terrain-blocked places is on by default. The offline height grid removes clearly blocked places; uncertain cases stay shown. Distant dots and supporting names fade, while the centre result stays bright. The drawer's chevron minimises or expands it. Display choices and drawer state are saved on your iPhone. Browse places in the information sheet includes every named record, regardless of the enabled categories.

If dots sit consistently high or low, choose Adjust vertical alignment in Place display. Watch the live view and tap Raise dots or Lower dots. Each tap changes the correction by 0.25°. Done saves it on this iPhone; Reset restores zero. Check against independently identified summits.

Identification works offline. Finding an initial location can take time. An open view of the sky can help. The app clears a result when readings are unavailable, stale, or too uncertain. Use Retry after correcting the issue.

No matching place

Enable at least one category in Place display. The catalogue includes mapped summits and hills, viewpoints, passes, water features, settlements, landmarks and visitor services. Summits without usable recorded heights are excluded. Other places can use estimated terrain height, shown with an approximation symbol and an Estimated elevation label. Area and line markers use an approximate representative position. Places may be missing or inaccurate. Aim in another direction or search the source records using the top information button. A matched place can be hidden by nearer terrain or objects.
